Creating Art For Chamba – Part II – GS

In this multi-part post I will be talking about the art that goes into the making of Chamba. - Ganapathy Subramaniam
After a first cut of Concept art, which sets the overall visual theme, the next job for the art department is to visualize in detail the characters, their costumes, their personality, the environment, the sets and everything that appears in the movie. this is the Character, Environment/Set Design stage.
Let us look at Character design.
So, continuing … I got started in further developing the characters, and the world.

Here one should focus on using simple clear forms as the basis of everything, since all these have to be eventually modeled.
A complex foundation, will not only be hard to model, it will also take longer to render. So, keeping this in mind, I started creating very basic forms as the foundation for the characters.
Character design should also easily lead to character modeling. Hence the construction of the characters are also specified. As you notice in the picture above, construction breaks down a character into basic forms such as boxes, spheres and cylinders.
In all of this, inspiration comes in several ways, the movies we watch, the images we see, the stories we hear, the dreams that we dream, all helps in contributing to our ideas. so please keep an open eye on whatever you see and send in your ideas.
More later …
The character design, concept and theme will keep evolving even as we enter the next stages of modelling, and texturing. More and more refinements will be made to get the unique look that we Chambians are looking for.

Its Chamba Harvest time!

All of us at Chamba project are excited about making the community driven, free and open movie. And we want to share the fun with more people. So we are announcing two new initiatives..

Chamba Ignite

These will be quick online learning sessions. Its a quick way to get dirty, shed inhibitions to draw.

Chamba Season of Creativity

Every year we’ll pick a month and celebrates the “Chamba Season of Creativity”. Accepted student applicants are paired with a mentor or mentors from the Chamba teams. Admitted students may get stipends to work on various Chamba tasks depending on the funding we got for that season. CSC helps Chamba teams to bring in new artists and developers and the students get an exposure to community development, various tools etc

Creating Art for Chamba – Part I – GS

In this multi-part post I will be talking about the art that goes into the making of Chamba. – Ganapathy Subramaniam

In the Animation movie production pipeline, after the story idea is crystallized and a script is ready, then its time for art. This is where everyone gets imaginative about the visual imagery, and start creating a new world containing various places, people and things. The script guides this process of imagination, but creativity has no limits. The script is taken as the starting point, and a world begins to evolve from the pencil of the artists.
